Career
Khan made his film debut with a small role in Salaam Bombay! (1988), which was followed by years of struggle. After a leading role in the British film Warrior (2001), he broke through with leading roles in the dramas Haasil (2003) and Maqbool (2004). He then received rave reviews for his roles in “The Title” (2006), “Life in… Metro” (2007) and “Paan Singh Tomar” (2011). He won the National Best Actor Award for his lead role in the last of these films.
In 2012, he was chosen to play Irrfan Khan in the American film The Amazing Spider-Man. More recently, he starred in Partition directed by Vic Sarin and A Mighty Heart for Michael Winterbottom alongside Angelina Jolie. Irrfan is the first Bollywood actor to star in two Oscar-winning films (Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire and Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, starring Suraj Sharma). Most Hindi film actors die out when they reach middle age, but Khan comes of age when others retire. His unconventional look and intense eyes earned him a coveted lead role in Macbool (2003), a Hindi rendition of Macbeth set in the Bombay metro. Khan’s stunning role in Maqbool earned him all the major acting awards in India.
He was also rewarded for his portrayal of a student leader who emerges from nowhere but stumbles before reaching his climax in Haasil (2003), a love story set against the backdrop of university politics (Allahabad). Critics praised it as a rare achievement in Hindi cinema. Khan’s most challenging role comes from British director Asif Kapadia’s film The Warrior (2001), which won the BAFTA award for best film in 2003. Khan plays a lone warrior who gives up his violent role as a lawman to a local lord, only to find himself bloodied in the Himalayan mountains.

In 2012, he changed the spelling of his name from “Irfan” to “Irfan”; he said he liked the sound of the extra “r” in his name. In 2016, he dropped the name Khan because he wanted his work to define him, not his origins.
Sickness and death
In March 2018, Khan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor. He died of colitis caused by the tumor on April 29, 2020 in Mumbai at the age of 53.
