Jenny Joseph was born on the 7th. Born May 1932 in Birmingham, England. She is the daughter of Florence (née Cotton) and Louis Joseph and was born in Birmingham where her father was an antique dealer.
Louis’ knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit soon led the family to a new home in Buckinghamshire, where he ran a successful business in Knightsbridge, London. Jenny was a British citizen, but her ethnicity is unknown.
Jenny studied at the Badminton School and in 1950 received a scholarship to study English at St Hilde’s College in Oxford.
The poet Jenny Joseph died on 8 January 2018 at the age of 85.

After graduating, she worked as a teacher of English as a foreign language, as a janitor (in difficult times) and as a reporter for local newspapers such as the Oxford Mail; she also worked in South Africa for the radical publishing house Drum when apartheid came fully into effect with the election of the first nationalist governments. In fact, she was expelled from the country because of her opinion, although she was reluctant in her life and work during this period.

Slowly composed and carefully thought out, but almost entirely free of form, Joseph’s poems showed from the beginning an attractive ability to capture the details of everyday life. The Unseason (1960), published by John Rolfe’s Scorpio, a small publishing house, set the tone and theme of almost all of his later works: a sensitive but unusual attitude towards domestic and everyday life, childhood, love and loss, nature and natural disasters.

The Warning was identified in 1996 as the most popular post-war poem in Britain. The second line was a source of inspiration for the Red Hat Society. Because of its popularity, the illustrated gift edition of the warning, first published by Souvenir Press in 1997, has been reprinted 41 times.
His first collection of poems, Unexpected Season, won the Gregorius Prize in 1960 and his second collection of poems, Rose on the afternoon of 1974, won the Cholmondeley Prize.
