Jody Miller is a singer-songwriter, who has released three albums and one EP. She was discovered by the legendary Prince in Minneapolis, Minnesota when she was just 15 years old. Her most recent album “Queen of the House” was released in 2016.
Jody Miller pioneered a combination of folk, country, and pop that laid the way for the folky country-pop of the 1970s, despite being renowned for her answer to Roger Miller’s “King of the Road,” “Queen of the House.” She was born Myrna Joy Miller in Oklahoma and learnt to play guitar at the age of 14 after being influenced by Joan Baez’s songs. Miller joined a folk group and started playing at a local café shortly after. Lou Gottlieb, a member of the Limelighters, heard her sing and was so taken with her that he offered to assist her in obtaining a recording deal on the condition that she relocate to Los Angeles. Miller originally rejected due to her recent marriage, but she and her husband finally traveled to California to test the waters. A family acquaintance set up an audition with Capitol Records, which signed Miller while advising her to alter her name from Myrna to the more folkier “Jody.”
Miller’s first album, Wednesday’s Child Is Full of Woe, was released in 1963 and was a commercial success, leading to performances on Tom Paxton’s folk music television program. With “He Walks Like a Man,” she scored a small pop success in 1964, but “Queen of the House,” which reached number five on the country charts and number 12 on the mainstream charts in 1965, was her breakthrough. Despite her country success, Miller continued to have pop singles; her follow-up to “Queen of the House,” “Silver Threads and Golden Needles,” was a small hit in the summer of 1965, as was the protest song “Home of the Brave.” She recorded a couple of albums and singles in the second part of the 1960s, none of which received any notice.
Miller departed the West Coast towards the end of the 1960s to spend more time with her family on her Oklahoma ranch. She resumed recording with Billy Sherrill in Nashville in late 1970 after a few years of semi-retirement; the result, Look at Mine, was published in 1971 and contained a mix of country-pop compositions and a few traditional classics. The album gave her her first run of country singles, with “He’s So Fine” and “Baby I’m Yours” both reaching the Top Ten, as well as numerous additional songs reaching the Top 40. Miller was a consistent Top Ten performer in 1972 and 1973. Her return, however, came to an end almost as swiftly as it began: she was no longer able to break the Top 40 by 1974, despite a succession of small songs. With “Darling, You Can Always Come Back Home,” she made it back into the Top 40 in 1977, although her career had stagnated for the most part. Her Epic contract terminated in 1979, and she decided to retire to her ranch with her family.
Miller made a comeback in 1987 with the self-released My Country, a collection of patriotic songs that drew the notice of President-elect George H.W. Bush, who asked her to sing at his inaugural ball in 1988. Miller’s now-grown daughter Robin persuaded her to return to country music, and the two created a duet as a result. They attempted unsuccessfully to acquire a record deal in Nashville in 1990. Miller resurfaced as a gospel vocalist in the late 1990s, with albums like I’ll Praise the Lamb (1997) and Higher (1998). (1999).
