Mari Trini Biography, Songs, & Albums |

During the closing years of Francisco Franco’s regime, Mari Trini became one of Spain’s most successful and influential pop performers, penning and recording a series of feminist protest songs that challenged the view of women in music and in Spanish culture as a whole. Mara Trinidad Pérez de Miravete was born on July 12, 1947, in Murcia, and had a difficult childhood due to a chronic kidney condition that kept her in bed from the age of seven to fourteen, with corticoid therapy to blame for the scarring on the left side of her face. Trini studied music, wrote her first songs, and taught herself guitar while imprisoned; despite doctors declaring her condition “incurable,” she eventually escaped and began a career as a folk singer, settling in Madrid and performing at the Nicha’s nightclub on Avenida de América, which is owned by renowned American filmmaker Nicholas Ray. While Ray arranged for Trini to study dramatic art in London with actor Peter Ustinov, his promises of a movie part fell through, and she moved to Paris in 1963, where she stayed for more than four years. Trini encountered French musician Jacques Brel at this time and recorded her first song “Bonne Chance,” which captured a highly personal, terribly mournful intensity that garnered her comparisons to Edith Piaf. Trini returned to Spain after her father’s death in 1967, signing with RCA and releasing her self-titled debut album in 1969. Featuring a handful of originals alongside material from songwriters like Luis Eduardo Aute and Patxi Andión, the album received little attention, but the follow-up, Amores, was a smash, spawning hits like “Un Hombre Marchó,” “Maana,” “Cuando Me Acaricias,” and “Vals

Una Estrella en Mi Jardin Trini’s third album, Escchame, from 1972, is generally regarded as her finest; songs like “Yo no Soy Ésa,” with lyrics like “That’s not me/I’m not your innocent, calm little miss,” established the singer as the voice of young women across Spain. But, even as her celebrity increased, Trini stayed out of the spotlight. As a closeted lesbian, she aggressively shielded her personal life from public scrutiny, evading innumerable media enquiries about her love life throughout the years (or seeming lack thereof). Trini’s earlier recordings’ bohemian chic gave way to a mainstream pop approach, complete with lush orchestral arrangements, and while albums like 1982’s Una Estrella en Mi Jardn sold well, her star waned over the next decade, and after 1987’s En Tu Piel, she didn’t resurface until 1990’s Espejismos, with a five-year hiatus before her next release, Sin Barreras. Mari Trini con los Panchos, released in 2001, was a financial and critical success for Trini, who teamed up with the famous Latin American group Los Panchos to relive great songs from her career. Trini received a special diamond disc from the Spanish Society of Authors and Publishers in 2005 for sales of over 10 million records, and the regional government of Murcia gave her the “Struggle for Equality” award in March 2008, in honor of International Women’s Day, for “portraying women’s needs, problems, and inequalities through her songs.” Trini’s health deteriorated in the latter years of her life, and doctors had to remove one of her kidneys in 2004. She passed away on April 6, 2009.
