John Dramani Mahama, flag bearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), assured commercial vehicle drivers and owners that his next government would reduce import duties on commercial vehicles to make them affordable.
In his view, in particular, import duties on sprint buses should be reduced in order to make the purchase cheaper for drivers and vehicle owners.
This is what Mahama said at a mini-meeting in Mponyanse at Adansi Acrofum in the community of Obuasi, Ashanti District, as part of his six-day campaign tour of the region.
Since then, the campaign has been suspended following the death of former President Jerry John Rawlings, the founder of the NDC.
Mahama pointed out that when his next government takes office, she will conclude an agreement with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Association of Concerned Drivers and other drivers’ unions to rent buses to them.
With regard to the Okada drivers, Mr Mahama explained that he had legalised their activities and offered them training to improve their performance.
According to him, some companies have agreed to cooperate with the NDC administration to supply motorcycles and helmets to Okada drivers under working and payment terms.
With regard to the administration of the Free University of Applied Sciences (FHS), Mr Mahama said that his next government would maintain and improve it and end the two-track system during his first year in office.
He recalled that before the departure of the NDC from government in 2016, he had started building 500 SDFs across the country to prepare for the full implementation of the Free SDF programme.
He said more schools would be made available to include students in the program.
The government will also set up vocational training centres in each district to enable young people to become entrepreneurs.
Mahama said that those who want to train apprentices will be assigned to the craftsmen and that the government will pay for the training.
With regard to the farmers, he noted that the then NDC administration offered a number of incentives to the farmers, such as free fertilizer for the cocoa farmers, but stated that this is not currently the case.
He called on farmers, artisans, small-scale miners and Ghanaians in general to reconsider their standard of living and participate in the 7th World Congress of Ghanaians. December to vote wisely.
Mr. Mahama gave the small-scale miners the confidence that his next government would track down all the miners they had captured and send them back to their rightful owners.
He called on the Ghanaians to vote on the 7th. It was decided to choose number two in December, so that the NDC can return to power and continue its good work.
Nana Kwabena Anti, Ankobejen of the Ambonians, called on the presidential candidate to restore their streets and establish a high school in the city if they win the parliamentary elections.
