Aslan’s family came to the United States from Tehran in 1979 during the Iranian revolution. As a result, he spent most of his youth in the San Francisco Bay Area, a period of his life he claims to have spent as a Mexican in the 1980s, when Americans of Iranian descent were subject to high levels of discrimination. He attended the Del Mar School in San Jose, where he graduated in 1990. He then became a teacher at La Salle School in Concord, California. He received a B.A. in Religious Studies from the University of Santa Clara, an M.A. in Theological Studies from the Harvard School of Theology, an M.A. from the University of Iowa Writing Workshop, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Aslan, who was born in Iran, is besides English also Farsi native language and also studies Greek to facilitate the study of ancient texts. Although he was born into a Shiite family, Aslan converted to Protestant Christianity at the age of 15 and returned to Islam in the summer before going to Harvard, for which he was condemned as a Shiite by the University Guard in 2015. Later he explained his point of view on religion by saying: It’s not that I think Islam is right, but Christianity is wrong. This means that all religions are nothing more than a language consisting of symbols and metaphors to help a person explain his or her faith.
