When Bakker was convicted and imprisoned on numerous charges of fraud, culminating in the cancellation of their program, she became even more well-known. Messner received appreciation for her caring approach toward the LGBTQ community, notwithstanding the incident.

Early Years and the Start of a Career

Tammy Faye Messner was born Tamara Faye LaValley in 1942 to Pentecostal preachers Carl and Rachel in International Falls, Minnesota. Her parents separated shortly after she was born, and her mother remarried to a widower, giving birth to a family of nine children, the eldest of whom was Messner.

Messner attended North Central Bible College in Minneapolis for her further education. She met Jim Bakker, a fellow student and eventual husband, there. The couple relocated to South Carolina in 1962 to begin their ministry. Messner sang and played the accordion as her husband preached throughout the nation.

Beginnings of a Television Career

Messner and her husband started working in Portsmouth, Virginia, for Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network in 1966. The couple played an important role in the network’s development by presenting a puppet ministry for kids called “Come On Over.” They also co-founded the nighttime discussion show “The 700 Club” and presented “Jim and Tammy,” a successful children’s show. Messner and her husband co-founded California’s Trinity Broadcasting Network with Paul and Jan Crouch after quitting the network in 1972. After eight months, however, Bakker and Crouch had a falling out, and the relationship came to an end.

“The PTL Club” is a slang term for a group of people

Messner and her husband relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, after leaving Trinity Broadcasting Network, where they launched their own Christian talk program, “The PTL Club,” in 1974. The show was first carried on the PTL Satellite Network, which also aired other religious programs throughout the country. It was originally presented from an abandoned furniture shop. Messner and her husband utilized PTL money to construct Heritage USA, a Christian theme park in Fort Mill, South Carolina, in 1978. The theme park was one of the most popular in the United States at the time, rivaling Disneyland and Disney World in terms of attendance.

Messner became renowned for sharing emotional tales and performing Christian music on “The PTL Club.” She gained notoriety for her candid talks of issues that other evangelicals deemed taboo, such as matters relating to the LGBTQ community. Messner, a staunch supporter of the LGBT community, is most known for interviewing homosexual Christian pastor Steven Pieters, who was diagnosed with AIDS during the height of the epidemic. Messner went on to encourage her audience to have sympathy for people suffering from the illness.

“The PTL Club” has been disbanded.

The FCC investigated “The PTL Club” in 1979 for abusing money collected over the radio. Bakker was discovered to have raised approximately $350,000 that was intended to go toward foreign missions but was instead used to support Heritage USA a few years later. PTL money were also utilized for the Bakkers’ personal expenditures, according to the FCC and subsequently the IRS.

When it was revealed that almost $300,000 of the club’s finances had been used as hush money to quiet secretary Jessica Hahn, who claimed that Jim Bakker had raped her, “The PTL Club” ultimately fell apart in 1987. This event drew a barrage of media attention to the couple’s life. Bakker eventually resigned, and his replacement was Rev. Jerry Falwell. Bakker was arrested in 1989 and charged with eight charges of mail fraud, one act of conspiracy, and fifteen counts of wire fraud. He was handed a 45-year jail term and a $500,000 fine. Bakker’s sentence was subsequently reduced to eight years, although he only served five since he was granted release in 1994 despite owing the IRS $6 million.

Messner filed for divorce in 1992, while her spouse was incarcerated. She married Roe Messner, a family friend who had developed most of Heritage USA via his construction company, the following year. Roe was convicted of bankruptcy fraud in 1996 and received a sentence of 27 months in jail.
