Biography of Uhuru Kenyatta
Kenya’s fourth president, Uhuru Kenyatta, is a Kenyan politician and businessman who was born in the country. During my investigation for this profile, I came across a number of facts that surprised me. That’s what I learned about him.
Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of the Republic of Kenya, gave birth to Uhuru. He was born into a well-to-do Kikuyu family with political clout. He subsequently enrolled at St. Mary’s School in Nairobi, where he played winger for the school’s rugby team. He traveled to Amherst College in Massachusetts to study political science and economics after leaving St. Marys.
Muigai began his horticulture company following his return trip home, and it quickly became a success. He was also given certain responsibilities in the administration of his family’s property.
In the mid-1990s, Uhuru became politically engaged, and in 1997, he was elected head of KANU (Kenya African National Union), the country’s longest-ruling party, which also brought his father to the president. Later in life, he attempted but failed to get a legislative seat. Despite his failure, the then-president, Daniel Arap Moi, had him as a mentor. He was constantly willing to prepare him for a higher position in the government.
In 1999, Moi nominated him as head of the Kenya Tourist Board. Uhuru was given another another duty as head of the Disaster Emergency Response Committee a year later.
Since President Moi selected Uhuru to fill in as a Member of Parliament in October 2001, his political prominence has risen above the bars. He was promoted to the post of Cabinet Minister for Local Government a month later.
In the same year, President Moi pushed Uhuru to become the Kanu presidential candidate, a contentious decision. Moi was ineligible for a second term at the time, therefore he wanted Kenyatta to replace him. Many people, however, were concerned that Uhuru’s election would enable President Moi to exert some control over administration. This succession backfired, and Uhuru rose to become the parliament’s opposition leader.
Kenyatta was elected head of KANU in 2005. In the run-up to Kenya’s presidential election in 2007, Uhuru gave it another go before quitting in favor of Mwai Kibaki. Kibaki was re-elected against Raila Odinga and many other candidates. Kibaki went on to win by a razor-thin margin against Odinga. The defeat was not well accepted, as it sparked many issues that eventually led to post-election rioting.
In January 2008, Kibaki nominated Uhuru Kenyatta as Minister of Local Government, after his inauguration. However, following the formation of a coalition government, he was re-appointed as deputy prime minister and commerce minister. He was reshuffled to be the minister of finance a year later.
The International Criminal Court identified Uhuru as one of six suspects in the 2007 post-election violence in 2010. However, when he established his innocence, these accusations were ruled null and invalid. He subsequently broke away from KANU to establish his own political party, The National Alliance (TNA). They later joined the Jubilee Party, a partnership that includes Dr. William Ruto’s URP (United Republic Party).
The two then ran as presidential candidates in Kenya’s 2013 presidential election, eventually winning. On April 9, 2013, Uhuru was sworn in as Kenya’s first president. He was President of the Republic of Kenya during the first five years of his tenure, from 2007 to 2017. The pair decided to run for another term, which led to his being elected President of Kenya.
