With his younger brother, he begins school life at Blair Academy. After high school, he graduated from Cornell University in 1954. There he was a member of the Pen and Dagger Society and editor of the Cornell Daily Sun. In 1958, he earned a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University and three years later completed his doctoral studies in Vienna, Austria.

He began his journalism career in 1959 and worked for the New York Herald Tribute as a science reporter and Washington correspondent from 1961 to 1963. He also worked as a science editor for the New York Times in 1966.
From 1967 to 1971 he worked for the White House in Los Angeles by the Hour, a daily newspaper in El Segundo, California. When he wrote in 1971 about taxpayer spending on the San Clemente vacation home in Nixon, California, and the Key Biscayne vacation home in Florida, he was expelled from the White House.

But he was one of those people who never look back after a defeat. That same year he became a correspondent at the Woodrow Wilson Center, and in 1973 he became news editor of the virtual station WNBC-TV. At Ohio State University, he was Kiplinger’s first PR professor. Later, in 1975, he became associate editor and managing editor of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper.

In 1980, he joined Turner Broadcasting Systems as editor of the Washington bureau of the Cable News Network. He was appointed Senior Correspondent in 1983 and Executive Producer in 1986. He then became editor-in-chief of CNN World Report in 1987, vice president of CNN in 1990 and vice president of CNN in 1993. – Vice president of CNN, and executive vice president of Turner International Broadcasting in 1993. – He then became Executive Vice President of Turner International Broadcasting, Russia in 1987.
